2001 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new design for popular compact car. introductionsince the 1996 civic debuted, honda's small car has set the pace in the subcompact class due largely to its quality, efficiency, pleasant road manners and comfortable cabin. More than 300,000 civics roll out of honda's north american production plants each year, placing the civic among the top five best-sellers.  despite this success, stylists and engineers at honda in japan and ohio have spent the past three years developing new versions of the civic that arrive as 2001 models. Their goal is to improve quality by a factor of 10.  the idea driving these new designs is to maximize space for people and minimize the room required for mechanical systems, produce larger but more efficient engines, increase safety systems and comfort features, and enhance the manufacturing process by constructing fine cars with refined components and body panels that fit together precisely. Models include the base civic dx sedan 12,960); lx 15,010), which adds power-operated controls and luxury features; top-of-the-line ex 16,910), which gets a more powerful engine, body-colored power mirrors and a remote entry system. The hx is equipped with an efficient lean-burn engine capable of 44 miles per gallon when teamed to the standard five-speed manual transmission. The coupe comes with a more aggressive windshield rake than the sedan for a sportier look. Sedans and coupes measure identically in wheelbase and share a common structure, although the coupe has steel reinforcements for bulkheads, the floor pan and the front and rear roof pillars to compensate for the absence of the sedan's center side pillars. walkaroundsedan or coupe, the 2001 honda civic presents a basic wedge-shaped profile with a high, curt tail and low, abbreviated prow. To effect such a sharp slope of the front hood, the steering box had to be relocated to a high center spot on the firewall and a compact new front strut suspension devised. Further, the condensed compartment required an engine of smaller physical size. These internal changes set up the most dramatic styling distinction from the previous civic design, as the new hood drops by 2. 6 inches.  the new civic presents a clean but conservative face with a discreet horizontal grille set between larger triangular multi-lens headlamps that curve around the corners. A wide air intake stretches across the body-colored bumper with a low front spoiler added for downforce.  relatively flat flanks carry linear molding. Windshield pillars arch into the rolled roof to meet the rear arches of narrow c-pillars. Bold taillamps dominate the blunt rear panel underscored by a body-colored bumper.  civic coupe's taillamps offer a signature pattern of light at night. interiorthe most significant change in the new civic occurs with an expansion of the passenger compartment, which increases in volume from 101. 7 cubic feet to 104. 3 cubic feet, enough to elevate the car from subcompact to compact status.  these spatial gains were achieved by raising the roof, moving front pillars forward and developing a flat cabin floor. The additional space becomes most apparent in the back seat, where legroom increases by 1. 9 inches in the sedan, or 0. 6 inches for the coupe. Space for hips and shoulders is fractionally larger in the new civic than in the 2000 model. A bench in back is large enough for three children or two adults to ride comfortably. The seats were reworked to provide more support from a rigid structure and stronger side bolsters; the seat cushions stand about an inch higher than the previous design to make entry and exit easier.  for the coupe, front seatbacks stretch broad and deep, and headrests are open at the center like a doughnut. Front seatbelts attach to a side anchor bar that slides out of the way when someone climbs into the back seat. The seat also cooperates for rear entry by sliding forward under power when the seatback tilts forward, then returns to its original position due to a memory setting. Round white-on-black analog instruments include an oversized speedometer and tachometer in a central position flanked by smaller fuel and coolant gauges. In the coupe, gauges show silver highlights and glow with amber light at night. Controls for audio and climate systems are housed in a pod on the center dash that adds large rotary dials.  safety equipment includes front seatbelt pretensioners for lap and shoulder, two-stage frontal airbags, three-point safety belts for five seat positions, child seat anchor brackets for the back seat and an emergency trunk release lever inside the trunk. Optional side-impact airbags are available, along with anti-lock brakes. driving impressionbeneath the new styling, the civic rides on a stiff new structure that carries new suspension elements and larger but more efficient powertrains. We drove several variations of the sedan and coupe on freeways and narrow back roads that wind through the convoluted hills near san diego. There, we discovered all the new civics offer competent pavement manners. In certain iterations, they are spunky and fun to drive.  most fun to drive is the civic es with a manual transmission. With its more powerful engine, the es produces lively acceleration, while the manual gearbox affords more driver control. This engine produces 127 horsepower and its torque extends across a broad rpm band, so the driver gets good throttle response at any speed. Shifting is smooth and precise, due to the revised feel of the stick with notched stop points added between gears. This is most noticeable with the automatic transmission; a little more time is needed in the passing lane when trying to pass another vehicle at speed.  ride quality is smooth and easy with civic's new suspension that uses macpherson struts up front and a double wishbone in the rear. Noise, vibration and harshness are reduced, largely due to improvements in structural rigidity, along with liquid-filled engine mounts plus noise- and vibration-damping materials added throughout the civic's body. Wind noise was diminished through aerodynamic streamlining. The net effect: when driving at highway speed, riders may converse in a normal voice without distractions from mechanical or wind noises. It also comes with more standard equipment than before. With engines earning high fuel economy figures, all models qualify for ulev status. Its improvements and positive environmental position moves the honda civic ahead of the curve in the compact class. model lineupdx 12,960); lx 15,010); ex 16,910); hx coupe 13,560). assembled ineast liberty, ohio. options as testedair conditioning, power moonroof with tilt feature, central power locking system, power windows with express down for driver, power controls for two exterior mirrors, remote entry system, driver's seat manual height adjustment, rear bench seat with 60/40 split folding seatback, am/fm/in-dash cd, 15-inch wheels, 185/65/r15 86h tires; destination charge. model testedcivic es sedan. 2000 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's favorite small car. introductionhonda civic is one of the most popular compacts sold in the u. Many of us grew up with them because the civic has been a honda trademark for more than 30 years.  clever engineering, honda's renowned assembly quality and all the conveniences create an entry-level car that provides more than basic transportation. Honda makes a civic to suit many types of people. Trim levels include cx, dx, lx, ex, hx and si.  the least expensive model is the cx hatchback. Even a basic radio costs extra here, though a split/folding rear seat, tinted glass and a rear-window defroster are included. Regardless of body style, the basic dx trim level includes dual outside mirrors, an am/fm radio and adjustable steering column. All sedans and automatic transmission-equipped coupes and hatchbacks come with power steering. Mid-grade lx sedans add air conditioning, power windows and door locks and cruise control. Ex sedans and coupes come with just about everything, including a more powerful engine, a power moonroof and antilock brakes. Automatic transmission adds $800-$1,000 to most models. (see details on pricing & specifications page.). walkaroundclean, efficient styling reflects the purpose of the honda civic. All three body styles use identical sheet metal from front bumper to windshield. They feature a distinct wedge profile rising from front to rear with large headlights and taillights. Careful detailing lends character to a simple form.  some of the details that make the civic appealing are also functional. The low cowl and hood line combine with generous glass area to provide exceptional visibility for driver and passengers. All three civics have large doors, and offer handy access to well-shaped stowage spaces in back. interiorcivic interiors are well-designed, neatly executed and more functional than ostentatious. Interior materials seem to have been selected with durability rather than maximum eye appeal in mind. Civics offer 12 cubic feet of luggage space and that can be augmented by folding down the rear seats. A base civic has but three gauges - speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature - while up-level models add a tachometer. These are lightweight cars, so even the base 106-horsepower engine is more than sufficient. The uplevel choices are rated at 115 and 127 horsepower. All civic engines use 4-valve-per-cylinder technology (16v) for maximum efficiency. In fact, all are mechanically identical with the exception of those used in ex sedans and coupes and hx coupes. These add a variable valve timing system (called vtec by honda) that makes them extraordinarily responsive at any speed. Regardless of output, civic powerplants are exceptionally smooth and economical.  a 5-speed manual transmission - one of the easiest-shifting gearboxes on the market - is standard for all civics. The optional 4-speed automatic uses electronic controls to minimize unnecessary shifting when driving up or down hills. Both transmissions are excellent and suit the high-revving characteristics of all three engines.  hx coupe's optional continuously variable belt-drive transmission (cvt). It is a fascinating device controlled by what looks like a normal automatic shift lever with three forward ranges, though only drive is necessary in everyday use. Pull away from a stop and the engine revs faster than the car accelerates. The cvt seems a novelty at first, but after a few miles one begins to wonder why it hasn't replaced the automatic option in all civics.  there's nothing lacking in the remainder of the civic's mechanical hardware either. It was comfortable at cruising speeds, boasting a ride that was smooth yet well enough controlled to fend off most pavement irregularities. Road and engine noise are always present, but only become obtrusive during hard acceleration.  the driving pleasure really begins when the civic is urged through corners. Especially noteworthy is the power steering. Unlike some systems, the civic's steering does not isolate the driver from the road. Body roll is held to a minimum (the front stabilizer bar fitted to uplevel coupes and sedans really does help). The civic shines in these conditions. All civics are compact, with the largest sedan being just over 14 feet long. If economy is the primary motivator, any will do, with top honors going to the base coupe. Luxury, in a relative sense, is available as well, though the price for a full load of amenities puts the civic up against base versions of larger, more substantial cars.  the easy part is deciding to make the civic a primary candidate while small-car shopping. 2008 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Broad line of superb compacts. introductionthe honda civic holds its position at the top of this highly competitive class, with innovative styling, segment-leading refinement, and a broad model line that ranges from eco-friendly to sport-compact racy.  the civic is comfortable and affords the driver outstanding outward visibility. It comes standard with side-impact airbags and other safety features that are optional on competitive models.  the 2008 lineup includes a new leather-upholstered ex-l model and a hot mugen si sedan, with high-performance suspension, forged aluminum wheels, aerodynamic body styling, and a sport-tuned exhaust.  civic was last restyled and reengineered for 2006, and the sporty si coupe was reintroduced at the same time. The hybrid features dramatically reduced emissions, and it delivers an epa-rated 40/45 mpg city/highway, second only to the toyota prius.  a natural gas-powered civic, the gx sedan, is available to residents of california and new york, but can also be found in fleets there and elsewhere. lineupthe 2008 honda civic is available in coupe and sedan versions. A five-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the honda civic dx coupe 14,810) and sedan 15,010) are the base models. Standard equipment is confined to power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and fold-down rear seatback. The coupe gets a rear decklid spoiler. Brakes are disc in front, drum in rear. P195/65r15 tires wrap around steel wheels with full-cover hubcaps.  the civic lx coupe 16,760) and sedan 16,960) add air conditioning; cruise control with steering-wheel-mounted controls; power door locks with keyless entry; center console with sliding armrest; overhead map lights; and express up/down for the driver's power window; p205/55r16 tires on steel wheels with covers. The coupe has six speakers and a rear-seat walk-in feature that remembers the front passenger seat's setting.  the civic ex coupe and sedan 18,710) add power moonroof; variable-speed windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; and outside temperature indicator. The keyless remote adds a trunk release button. They come only with a six-speed manual transmission. Other go-fast goodies include a limited-slip differential, sport suspension, electronic vehicle stability assist system with traction control, and p215/45r17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside are synthetic suede sport seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; 350-watt stereo. Packages include high-performance p215/45zr17 tires for the coupe 21,310) and sedan 21,510); xm and navigation 22,860 and $23,060); or with all of the above 23,060 and $23,260).  new for 2008 is the mugen si sedan 29,500), which includes sports suspension, forged aluminum 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels, a full aerodynamic body kit with an adjustable rear wing and diffuser, and a sport-tuned exhaust.  the civic hybrid sedan 22,600) features a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt), automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. The hybrid is also available with the navigation system and xm satellite radio 24,350).  the civic gx 24,590) is essentially an lx sedan with a 1. 8-liter engine powered by natural gas. It comes only with a five-speed manual transmission. It comes with an auxiliary audio input jack for 2008. walkaroundthe honda civic sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. Details and markings distinguish each trim level.    a bright horizontal bar, with a prominent honda h in the middle, dominates the sedan's grille. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille is more delicate, with the honda logo suspended in a two-tier frame. The central lower air intake opens between two geometric side recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps. Even more so than with the sedan, the coupe front end pushes the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the wide track (the distance side to side between the tires).  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the sail panel (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model. The coupe's forms an acute angle with the horizontal deck surface, emphasizing the two-door body style; while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail end add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top.  the si sedan and coupe have another grille variation with a body-color bar on top and a black bar underneath; an understated si badge is tucked away to the far right. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. Both feature subtle body cladding.  the mugen si is more extroverted, distinguished immediately by its bi-plane rear spoiler and aggressive aero extensions all around the lower body and a diffuser in the rear bumper. Up front is an all-black version of the si grille that looks weirdly like parted lips wearing goth-black lipstick; a mugen badge beckons from the upper right lip. Businesslike 18-inch, seven-spoke wheels, open in design to show off the brake calipers, complete the mugen ensemble. Honda promises to limit production to a maximum of 1000 for the model year, all painted fiji blue pearl.  the hybrid, in contrast, is understated, with just a small 'hybrid' badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  seats are comfortable, not plush. The fabric upholstery feels durable, and its robust nap assists the modest side and bottom bolsters in restraining occupants during spirited motoring. Seat bottoms provide better than average thigh support. The manual height adjustment on the driver's seat pivots on front hinges, forcing drivers to choose between seat height and legroom. The si and mugen models get sport front seats with synthetic suede upholstery and more aggressive bolsters both bottom and side for improved support.  the view out the front, with the expansive windshield, low cowl and sloping hood, is unparalleled in the class. A commensurately low beltline would enhance side vision, but otherwise there's little about which to complain. Tiny front quarter windows on the sedan, necessary to allow the front door windows to roll all the way down, push the side view mirrors a bit too far rearward for quick and easy glances at neighboring lanes.  controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Despite the seeming logic of the two-tier instru.

2011 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A wide range of models is available. They're easy to drive, with ample windows that provide outstanding outward visibility.  we found ride quality in the civic solid but not overly firm, with less road noise and wind whistle than is common for the class. The stiff chassis gives the civic a solid and planted feel, with impressive stability and responsive steering, while the relatively long wheelbase smoothes the ride. Inside, the civic is pleasant, attractive and inviting. Bluetooth and navigation are available.  safety features include side-impact airbags as standard equipment. Vehicle stability assist electronic stability control comes on the civic ex-l, hybrid, and si models.  the 2011 honda civic comes in coupe and sedan versions. We found the civic lx sedan the most comfortable model. The hybrid model features dramatically reduced emissions, and it delivers an epa-rated 40/43 mpg city/highway.  the civic gx sedan uses natural gas for fuel. Natural gas is available to residents of california, new york, utah and oklahoma and is used by fleets elsewhere.  for 2011 the honda civic line remains essentially unchanged. Its styling was last freshened in 2009, after a total redesign for the 2006 model year. lineupthe 2011 honda civic dx coupe 15,605) and sedan 15,805) come with power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and fold-down rear seatback. The civic lx-s sedan 18,355) upgrades to alloy wheels, exclusive sport-trimmed black cloth seats with synthetic suede bolsters and silver stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear deck spoiler, and a chrome exhaust tip. A 5-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the civic ex coupe and sedan 19,605) skip some of the lx-s model's fancy trim but add a power moonroof; variable-speed intermittent windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; and outside temperature indicator. The steering wheel adds audio controls; while the keyless remote adds a trunk release button. The sedan's stereo adds two speakers (for a total of six); while the coupe gets a 350-watt, seven-speaker system; both get a usb interface. Both ex models are also available with automatic transmission, xm satellite radio, and voice-recognition navigation 22,405). A 5-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the civic ex-l coupe and sedan 21,955) add leather seats with seat heaters, leather-trimmed steering wheel and armrest, heated mirrors, and vehicle stability assist and brake assist. Packages include high-performance tires for the coupe 22,405) and sedan 22,605); plus xm and navigation 24,205 and $24,405).  the civic hybrid sedan 23,950) features a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt), automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. Vehicle stability assist comes standard. The hybrid is available with the navigation system and xm satellite radio 25,950) and with a leather interior 25,150) including heated front seats and side mirrors, or with the leather package, navigation, and xm 27,150).  the civic gx 25,490) is essentially an lx sedan with a 1. 8-liter engine powered by natural gas. It comes only with a 5-speed automatic transmission. walkaroundhonda civic comes in two distinct body styles, sedan and coupe, and they do not share any body panels. The honda civic sedan has a lower grille with a tall, trapezoidal center opening and secondary scoop-like openings on either side. A grid-like insert in the center opening contrasts with a kind of cyclone-fence theme in the side scoops. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders; visually connecting them is a bright bar with the honda h at the center and another slim air opening underneath. Around back, another bright chrome bar connects the taillights just above the indentation for the license plate.  the coupe's upper grille has the honda logo centered in an oval-themed black mesh, with a more shallow lower trapezoidal opening, and scoops at either side that are drawn out wide and horizontal and divided midway by a horizontal strut.  save for a lower body character line, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters break up the otherwise featureless expanse. Honda calls it a monoform design, and a central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the coupe's spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests sleek swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  details and markings distinguish each trim level.  on the si sedan, the grille bar is black instead of chrome. On both the coupe and sedan, an si badge tucks into the grille's lower left side, and oval fog lights are set into the bumper's outboard openings. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. A rear spoiler wraps over the outboard edges of the sedan's trunk lid; on the coupe, the spoiler is free-standing. Both sedan and coupe roll on their own unique alloy wheels. The hybrid is understated, with just a small hybrid badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  seats are comfortable, not plush. Seat bottoms provide better than average thigh support. The manual height adjustment on the driver's seat pivots on front hinges, forcing drivers to choose between seat height and legroom. The si models get sport front seats with synthetic suede upholstery and more aggressive bolsters both bottom and side for improved support.  the view out the front, with the expansive windshield, low cowl and sloping hood, is unparalleled in the class. A commensurately low beltline would enhance side vision, but otherwise there's little about which to complain. Tiny front quarter windows on the sedan, necessary to allow the front door windows to roll all the way down, push the side rear-view mirrors a bit too far rearward for quick and easy glances at neighboring lanes.  controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Despite the seeming logic of the two-tier instrument display, we still haven't adjusted to the resulting weird pod draped over the top of the dash.  the dash itself seems endlessly deep; draped across its top, in front of the driver, is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for instruments, a large, round, analog tachometer dominates the view through the top half of the steering wheel, with warning lights to either side. Outboard of this display are la.
