2007 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New sports models. introductionsubaru forester was one of the first crossover suvs, a pioneer in this new territory where some of the most useful attributes of a sport-utility meet the ride and driving dynamics of a car. The landscape has gotten more crowded since forester first appeared nearly a decade ago (in 1998), but recent revisions have kept it fully competitive.  the market research firm polk has concluded that forester inspires higher owner loyalty than just about any vehicle in production. That's easy to understand. On the road it delivers good handling and braking performance. It's more practical than the typical suv for prowling the urban jungle and better for handling treacherous weather on the highway. And the turbocharged 2. 5 xt limited is one of the more exhilarating vehicles of its type to drive.  for 2006, forester benefited from a mid-cycle refresh, meaning extensive changes but short of a total redesign. New styling created a slightly more serious, less cutesy look. Inside, subtle changes added comfort and convenience, particularly in the back seat. The suspension was revised for both improved ride comfort and more ground clearance for off-road forays.  for 2007, subaru has added the forester sports 2. 5 xt, which delivers the same performance as the flagship 2. 5 xt limited at a lower price point. Automatic climate control and unique trim inside and out are shared with the equally new but non-turbocharged forester sports 2. 5 x.  there's more standard equipment in other models as well. Foresters now come standard with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd). Tires and wheels on xt limiteds grow from 16 to 17 inches. While no rock crawler, forester is perfect for unpaved roads or logging trails, the conditions most encounter when venturing off the pavement. Forester is rated to tow up to 2400 pounds, enough for personal watercraft or a snowmobile but not enough for a car trailer or weightier boat.  forester has earned a good record for reliability. It has performed well in laboratory crash tests. (forester earned a 'good' rating, which is the highest the insurance institute for highway safety gives out, in both front-offset and side-impact crashes.) and it comes with a high level of standard safety equipment. Models designated 2. 5 x are rated 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. The 2. 5 xt models are turbocharged and produce 224 horsepower and 226 pound-feet of torque. Wheels are 16-inch steel with 215/60r16 all-season radials.  the sports 2. 5 x 21,695) upgrades to anthracite black cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, a 120-watt stereo with better speakers, in-dash six-disc changer plus mp3/wma/cd-rw capability, sirius satellite radio, and an auxiliary input jack for ipods and other mp3 players. Bean edition 26,695) comes standard with a automatic transmission (so keep that in mind when comparing prices). Additional functional items, compared to the 2. 5 x premium, include an auto-dimming rearview mirror with built-in compass, a security system with shock sensor, and a self-leveling rear suspension. Unique colors with contrasting metallic lower-body cladding and special wheels distinguish the l. Inside, it features beige seats trimmed with leather and alcantara fabric; a momo wood-and-leather steering wheel; hard, water-resistant material in the cargo hold; and stitched l. Electronic stability control and traction control are available on higher-level models. walkaroundthe subaru forester won't be confused with other cars. Restyled for 2006, its appearance is unchanged for most 2007 models. It is, by intent, a fairly boxy machine, and its beauty lies more in its functional design. Despite its upright shape, the forester is impressively aerodynamic, with a sedan-grade 0. 36 coefficient of drag. Other things being equal, the more aerodynamic a vehicle is, the less wind noise inside and the better its fuel economy. interiorthe subaru forester is not tall by suv standards. Forward visibility is less likely to be obstructed by other vehicles than it is in the typical sedan. Indeed, visibility is great in all directions. The driver peers through an expansive windshield and big side glass with thin a-pillars. A wide rearview mirror and big outside mirrors provide an excellent view rearward.  the driver's seat is simple to adjust, but it can be tailored for a wide variety of tastes and sizes, and it has good bolstering. The adjustable steering wheel has good range.  rear-seat riders get good leg and head room, even with the optional moonroof. The rear seats were improved for 2006 with more thigh support. A fold-down armrest provides access to storage in the seatback.  new for 2007: interior trim has been revised with new bottle holders added to the front doors. And the ashtray has been banished, replaced by storage bin on base models and an auxiliary audio input jack on all others.  materials inside the forester have been steadily upgraded over the years, to the point where all are decent quality. The instrument panel and controls are efficiently designed. The gauge cluster is highly legible. We like the fluorescent-look backlighting on the turbo models best.  the optional leather interior looks and feels stylish. Bean model features a momo wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and matching shifter handle. The water-resistant surface on its cargo floor and rear seatback extends up the cargo area sidewalls.  the forester has great cargo capacity for its size. Lowering the 60/40 split rear seat increases that capacity from 31 cubic feet to 69 cubic feet. 2009 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger, roomier. introductionthe redesigned 2009 subaru forester is the third generation of the popular crossover utility vehicle. The forester competes with the honda crv and toyota rav4 among others. Visibility is exceptional.  overall, the 2009 forester is 3 inches longer, 2 inches wider, and about 100 pounds heavier than last year's model. Despite the increase in size and power, the base forester gets improved fuel mileage, achieving 20/26 mpg on the epa's new city/highway cycle, the same as the crv and rav4. The turbocharged forester xt gets 19/24 mpg and requires premium fuel. The turbocharged xt is more desirable because of its torque, although it's more expensive to operate because of its premium fuel requirement. lineupfor 2009, there are a number of changes to the styling that make the subaru forester way sleeker, but the identity has not been changed.  the functional hood scoop on the xt has a smaller bulge than before, but its opening is no less wide, thanks to a redesign of the turbocharger intercooler opening, and the steeper slope of the hood. The headlights with amber turn signals are shaped like gold-tipped eagles' wings, and the uplifting grille that fills the space between them has lost its boxiness, with corners upturned. Under the grille is a lower lip fascia that looks like there's a pack of snuff stuffed in it. The corners are tucked in so tightly that the bumper has almost been lost. The foglights are mounted in gray plastic fascia that runs 360 degrees around the car, being rocker panels on the sides. Even if there are no foglights the mounting spots are there in the gray plastic.  the lines on the sides of the car, especially the flares over the wheelwells that might be bigger for the sake of trendy styling but aren't, made the '08 forester look dumpy. A black c-pillar, camouflaged to hide in the tinted glass, helps with the shape thing on the 2009 model. The five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels aren't bad looking.  from the rear, the xt has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust, pretty cool for a tidy crossover. And the spoiler over the rear window makes its statement.  the forester and rav4 look alike when parked side by side. walkaroundthe new dashboard for 2009, taken from the impreza, has a nice gullwing sweep from the center stack off to the passenger side, in brushed-aluminum-looking plastic material, interrupted only by a single climate vent. Underneath is a big glovebox. The center stack has a bit more of that nice aluminum-look trim, which others have called cheap but it looks fine to us, and just forward of the shift lever is a good-sized cubby. Climate and audio controls on the center stack are simple to operate.  the background light to the gauges is a funky blue, just for effect, some will like it some won't. There's a slit over the center stack with digital display for time and temperature. The really nice perforated leather is a whole new ball game, erasing the almost-frumpy feeling sent by the cloth.  the front doors have a nice elbow rest and large pockets each with a recess for 24-ounce bottles. The aluminum pedals on the xt are cool.  the air conditioning cools well, fast and quiet.  following subaru's design goals, the new 2009 forester most needed rear-seat legroom and cargo space. The rear 60/40 seats fold flat to make a nice cargo area, widened by 5. 2 inches between the wheelhouses thanks to a new double-wishbone rear suspension. The relatively gigantic cargo area will definitely appeal to active outdoors enthusiasts with lost of stuff. The specs are 33. 5 cubic feet with the rear seat up, 68. 3 with the seats flat.  driver visibility is excellent in all directions, thanks to careful pillar design. Subaru staged a demonstration for us, placing a cutout of a kid behind the forester and a toyota rav4. The forester driver could see the kid in his rearview mirror at seven feet, but in the rav4 the kid was lost in a low blind spot for 23 feet.  the rear seat reclines in all but the 2. 5x base model, and includes a retractable center tray with fixed drink holders. Legroom is excellent, increased by 4. 3 inches, on a wheelbase increase of 3. 6 inches; and there's a couple inches more shoulder room, as well. It made at least one wild error on southern california freeways. Underneath is a big glovebox. 2011 subaru forester review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sales have been outstanding, with subaru setting an all-time annual sales record in 2010 by a healthy margin, the legacy outback closely leading the forester.  the 2011 forester x comes standard with a new, chain-driven double overhead-cam engine, this after many years with its 2. 5-liter belt-driven single-overhead-cam engine. It's the same 2. 5 liters and 170 horsepower, but torque is raised 4 foot-pounds and dropped 300 rpm; and it gets one more mpg, to an epa-estimated 21/27 mpg city/highway. During a week of all-around driving in a forester 2. 5x, we averaged 20. 7 mpg. Forester premium and forester limited models upgrade equipment such as sound systems and get all the right electronic stuff. Every model but the base 2. 5x now comes with bluetooth. An optional navigation system is a modest but effective tomtom (removable), which is much less than the option price of an integrated navigation system. Rear seat legroom is excellent, at 38. 0 inches. That alone is a big plus, and it's one of the reasons the forester is such a good family vehicle. The front door is wide, and the rear doors swing open 75 degrees and feel light, making it easy to get in and out.  we drove a turbocharged forester xt and a forester premium with the optional tomtom navigation system. We found the tomtom was just as effective for getting around as navigation systems whose option prices are twice as much, although the buttons, combined with the audio system buttons and screen, were tiny and few.  the forester is supremely secure in its sure-footed handling. It will go around corners like few suvs, with its all-wheel drive working to grip the road. Subaru excels at all-wheel drive. The forester has a low center of gravity thanks to its horizontally opposed engine mounted low in the chassis. Rack-and-pinion steering helps give the forester a tight steering radius, similar to the rav4 and tighter than the cr-v, making parking and maneuvering easy. The 2. 5x models come with the new 170-hp engine; 2. 5xt models get the familiar 224-hp turbocharged engine.  forester 2. 5x 20,495) comes with rugged cloth upholstery, air conditioning with rear vents and an air filtration system, a 60/40 split rear seat, sound system with single-disc cd, height and lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, cruise control, rear window wiper, and a trailer wiring connector, and 16-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard. The only options are a 4-speed automatic transmission with manual mode 1000), and 16-inch alloy wheels and roofrails 400).  forester 2. 5x premium 23,195) adds 17-inch alloy wheels with wider-profile all-season tires, privacy glass, 10-way power driver's seat, a reclining rear seat with retractable tray, roof rails, power moonroof, and steering wheel audio switches. For 2011, a new audio system includes am/fm stereo with single-disc cd player and six speakers, auxiliary input jack, bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming, ipod control capability, usb port and sirius satellite radio capability. An all-weather package 500) includes heated front seats and side mirrors. The 2. 5x premium with automatic transmission 24,195) makes available the removable tomtom navigation system 1095) including the all-weather package.  forester 2. 5x limited 26,495) features perforated leather seats in black or platinum, seatback storage pockets, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, new sound system with single-disc cd/dvd player with six speakers, automatic climate control, and foglights. It comes with the automatic transmission and cold-weather package as standard. They're distinguished by a hood scoop that takes air for the turbocharger intercoolers. The 2. 5xt premium gets a new 10-way power driver's seat, the new audio system, and body-colored roof spoiler. Standard equipment includes upgraded cloth upholstery, aluminum pedal covers, telescoping steering column, and foglamps. It's not bad looking, but it's a pragmatic vehicle, not meant to be a pretty one. Its shape is sporty enough, but it doesn't shout sport. It's squarish, but not blocky. It's slightly longer than a honda cr-v, slightly shorter than a toyota rav4, and an inch narrower than both; slightly taller than the cr-v but not as tall as the rav4.  the forester's wing-shaped headlamps might be the snazziest feature, somewhat saab-like in their appearance. Nice amber turn signals in the headlamp corners blend into fenders that are nicely wrapped around the car. The hood has sculpted edges, so subtle they're not noticed, but like the headlamps/eyes, the hood is a reminder that looks are not abandoned.  the front and rear fascia and rocker panels surround the car, and they're not very pretty in flat black plastic. They too have a function, being more rugged than shiny paint on sheetmetal, although no one does metal fascia any more anyhow. And at least the flat black plastic doesn't continue around the wheelwells, like on some suvs. Also, those wheelwells are not overflared to attract attention. That would be unlike subaru.  along the sides, above the flat black rocker panels, there's a straight styling groove where once there were ding strips.  the 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels that are standard equipment on the 2. 5x premium are nice. We also like the wheels on the forester xt we drove.  the forester xt is mostly distinguished by the scoop on the hood that takes in air for the turbocharger intercooler. From the rear, the xt has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust and a spoiler over the rear window that makes its statement. interiorthe forester cabin is comfortable and the seats are good. We like the leather better than the cloth. The available perforated leather is a whole new ball game, eclipsing the mundane cloth. Forester xt gets sporty aluminum pedals.  visibility is excellent through the windshield, with a modest hood, tight front fenders, and a-pillars designed to minimize blind spots. Visibility in the rearview mirror is not so good. The rear glass fills the mirror, but the rear seat headrests, middle seatbelt hanging from the ceiling, and rear center-mounted-stoplamp all intrude.
