2002 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish and nimble. introductiontoyota's rav4 is a sporty-looking small utility. It's comfortable and convenient for running around town, it's easy to park, and it feels stable out on the open road.  toyota completely redesigned and re-engineered its rav4 a year ago. The all-new toyota rav4 is more refined than the previous-generation model and it's much better looking. lineuptwo models are available: 2wd and 4wd. But they quickly escalate when adding options. That sounds more stable to us.  contributing more to improved stability, at least on paper, is the fact that the wheelbase was increased 3. 1 inches while the overall length grew by just 1. 3 inches to 165. 1 inches, which is still 10. 5 inches shorter than a subaru forester and 12. 5 inches shorter than a honda cr-v. The overall picture here is of an expanded cabin placed on a lower, wider platform.  the styling was dynamic, resulting from extensive sheetmetal reshaping. The old rav4 might have been seen as either cute or cobbly, depending upon the eyes of the beholder, but the new one is striking and aggressive looking. In one overnight swoop, it's gone from endearing to sexy.  the lines suggest a vector or wedge shape, which is pretty hard to do with a basic tall, small box. This is mostly accomplished by a sloping hood and downward cant from the rear quarter panels forward, under the side windows. When the arched roofline ends with the optional spoiler, the result is cool looking.  the cladding and body molding became smoother, the fender flares around 16-inch wheels are beefy for a mini suv, and styling scoops in the sides and hood show a big try at being eye-catching, maybe too much as the sheetmetal touches are pretty far beyond function. Combination taillights wrap nicely around the sides. At the nose, the headlights are shaped like wasp eyes, angling upward. Optional foglights are built into the airdam, which also contains a gaping grille with a few teeth. The gray body cladding looks good with some colors, but contrasts poorly with others.  the optional alloy wheels are a simple five-spoke star pattern, and the optional cover over the spare, hanging on the rear gate, serves its purpose in making the rav4 look less rough, but therefore less rugged. The rear hatch swings horizontally, hinged at the right side (inconveniently against the curb), and the weight of the tire is noticeable; however the step up into the cargo compartment is made easy by the reduced ground clearance. Underneath, maybe to accomplish this, the gas tank has shrunk from 15. 3 to 14. 7 gallons. interiorgetting in and out of the rav4 is easy thanks to the low load floor.  an important object of the toyota rav4 redesign was more cabin room. With the 50/50 split bench rear seats removed, there's now 68. 3 cubic feet of cargo volume available, compared to 57. 9 in the old model. There's also more cargo space behind the rear seats than before, as well as 2. 9 more inches of legroom in the front. The legroom is ample, and the driver's footrest allows even more stretch. New for 2002 is what toyota calls 'oak cloth.'  the redesign for 2001 narrowed the seats at the hips by 2. 4 inches, but we didn't feel squeezed. By day, the gauges are a sort of metallic off-white, and by night they glow sort of orange. Admittedly, these aren't quite as legible as boring old white on black gauges. Directly ahead are three circles: speedo on left, temp/fuel/warning lights and gear indicator in the circle on the right, and nicely balanced between and above them in a smaller circle is the neat-looking tach. Redline runs from 6500 to 8000 rpm, pointless because the power peaks at 6000 rpm.  climate controls are mercifully simple. There's a stubby stalk for the cruise control on the steering wheel, under the wiper stalk on the left side of the steering column. There are two big cupholders forward of the natty leather-wrapped e-brake lever between the seats, an accessory power outlet, and a small space near the console that's intended for change but big enough for cellphones. Sunglass holders too, under the steering wheel, and vanity mirrors with extensions and lights on each visor. We found the cargo cover constantly in the way. But it features a nice two-piece pullout design that makes it easy to remove. driving impressionthe toyota rav4's engine is a winner, though this is not the quickest vehicle on the planet. The 2. 0-liter engine is the same displacement as the previous-generation rav4 powerplant, but it is 40 pounds lighter, a benefit of its aluminum construction. It's more powerful and more efficient than before, delivering 23/27 mpg.  it makes 148 horsepower and 142 foot-pounds of torque. This makes it responsive and pleasant around town. Acceleration in the 4wd with automatic transmission is lively and feels almost effortless, as if the 2943-pound vehicle were featherweight. The final drive ratio of this vehicle is 3. 29, as opposed to 3. 12 on the 2777-pound 2wd, so the 2wd (front-wheel drive) should feel about the same. Every shift felt seamless.  around-town handling and parking lot maneuvering is wonderfully nimble; again, the rav4 feels even lighter than its 2943 pounds. On the highway, the power rack-and-pinion steering is precise, with no dodginess; the stretched wheelbase likely contributes to the improvement here. In gusty winds, however, the rav4 wanders quite a bit.  there's little that's truck-like about the suspension. The independent front suspension uses macpherson struts with l-shaped control arms, while the rear suspension is a double wishbone with coil springs and nitrogen-filled shock absorbers. The redesign includes softer spring rates, larger bushings and a longer suspension stroke. Chassis and suspension take bumps with equanimity, and offer a ride as good or better than many larger suvs. Maybe even more impressively, there's no detectable pitching or tipping, which is no mean feat for any suv.  finally, the brakes, which are plenty big enough for the weight, with 10. 7-inch front ventilated discs and 9. 0-inch rear drums. With a vehicle this good, it would be a shame not to include the optional abs. At $590, it also might be penny wise but pound foolish, especially since the abs includes ebd. That's electronic brake force distribution, which adjus. Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels

2010 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Getting in and out of the driver's seat is easy. It can move lots of people or lots of gear on a moment's notice. And it comes standard with a long list of safety equipment. We prefer the five-passenger configuration.  we found the rav4 smooth and stable underway. The sport model has a harder ride due to its suspension tuning. Ordered with the optional v6, the rav4 really scoots, boasting 269 horsepower.  for 2010 the rav4 is unchanged except for feature packaging. lineupthe toyota rav4 comes in three trim levels: base 21,500), sport 23,200) and limited 24,490). The v6 is upgraded with p225/65r17 tires on styled steel wheels. All models come with a full-size spare tire.  options at the base level include a third-row seat 840-940); six-cd changer 260); a selection of 17-inch wheels, both styled steel 120) and aluminum 440-560); a roof rack with crossbars 220); rear privacy glass 310); a cargo cover 90); daytime running lights 40); and a towing package for the v6 160) that includes a heavy-duty radiator fan coupling, transmission oil cooler, and 150-amp alternator. The tow package increases the rav4's towing capacity from 2,000 to 3,500 pounds.  rav4 sport adds a handling-tuned suspension and p235/55r18 tires on alloy wheels, plus fog lamps, rear privacy glass, color-keyed trim outside, unique charcoal fabric, and a rear spoiler. Options expand to include a power tilt-and-slide glass sunroof 900), navigation 1,550), a premium package, which includes leather upholstery with eight-way power driver's seat 1,930), a back-up monitor 475), and auto on/off headlights 70). An extra value package 470) combines the sunroof with a roof rack, daytime running lights, and six-cd changer. The third-row seat is not offered on the sport. The sport appearance package 577), available only on sport models with the v6 and 4wd, takes the spare wheel off the rear door and substitutes run-flat tires. It also adds power heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a stainless steel exhaust tip, and additional interior brightwork.  rav4 limited upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control, six-cd changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, leather-wrapped shift knob, cargo net and tonneau cover, heated and foldable power outside mirrors with new integrated turn signals, roof rails, engine immobilizer, the smart entry system, and other amenities. Outside, the limited is distinguished by a unique grille and front bumper, p225/65r17 tires on six-spoke alloy wheels, and a full hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 750-850), eight-way power driver's seat without leather 440), and a premium jbl stereo with bluetooth phone connectivity 610), plus most of the options from the sport level, mostly for the same prices. Two extra value packages bundle the jbl stereo, bluetooth, sunroof, power adjustable heated seats, and daytime running lamps; one includes navigation 2,110), the other doesn't 1,240).  safety features on all rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags, and side-curtain airbags. Active headrests on the driver and front passenger seats move up and forward in certain rear-end collisions to help reduce the distance between the occupant's head and the headrest. Front seatbelts incorporate pre-tensioners and force limiters. Also standard are latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc), traction control (trac), and a tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundthe rav4 looks like other contemporary toyotas, featuring an aerodynamically efficient ovoid profile strategically relieved by sharp character lines. A coefficient of drag of 0. 33 is among the best in its segment and a major factor in minimizing wind noise and maximizing fuel economy.  the rav4's truck-like front end is tautly composed. Visually, the fenders are separate elements from the engine bay, a situation emphasized by a tight rectangular grille that seems to sit comfortably atop the wider bumper slits below. Headlights are compact and focused. Vertical brake scoops, lined with black ribs, bite into the bumper beneath the headlights -- fog lights nestle into these scoops on sport models.  limiteds have a look all their own, with a single, deep, trapezoidal grille opening bolding bisected by a body-color horizontal bar with a large, chrome toyota world-t badge at its center. A pseudo-skid plate wraps up from the bottom, leaving no room for additional lower air intakes. Tubular nacelles supporting the fog lights replace the brake scoops of base and sport models.  alloy wheels have five spokes on sport, six on limited. A wide track gives the rav4 a solid stance visually, while resisting rollovers in emergency maneuvers.  the side view is oblong, a mix of boxy and oval, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the rav4's doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Taillights are positioned high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate, sunk into the lower left side of the swing-gate below the handle, visually balances the spare. The sport model's spoiler hangs conspicuously off the top edge of the roof.  the sport appearance package eliminates the spare entirely, and centers the license plate up high. A bulge low down on the tailgate fills in the step in the standard bumper when the tailgate is closed. A handle on the left side still betrays the gate's swing-open design, but in spite of this the overall look with the sport appearance package is remarkably more car-like, more station wagon than suv. interiorinside, the rav4 is functional, if a bit eccentric in style. Placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who has owned a previous rav4. The position and function of the controls populating the center stack is very good; that also applies to the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. The dash is sharply split by a horizontal indentation running the width of the car. About the only plus we found in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials are high quality. Fit and finish is toyota grade, which means excellent. All three trim levels share the same motif, with contrasting but complementary colors and brushed metallic trim elements around the stereo and climate controls, surrounding the shift gate and swooping around the door handles. The standard side-curtain airbags allow a passenger assist grip, which folds down from the headliner over each door.  the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat enable almost any size driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row seats improve the viewing range through the inside mirror.  the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, without bolsters. It's no surprise, really, seeing as how that seat has to fit three people in a pinch.  the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting the outboard second-row seats, is not especially easy, but it isn't as much of a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-sized sport utilities.  storage areas are plentiful. Beyond the glove box, the doors have fixed plastic map pockets, the backs of the front seatbacks wear net pouches, and a total of 10 cup holders are situated about the cabin. When the third-row s.

2008 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Powerful v6 and three-row seating available. introductionthe vehicle that pioneered the cute-ute segment is all grown up. Ever since its last total overhaul (for the 2006 model year), the toyota rav4 has offered seating for seven, cargo capacity comparable to some mid-size suvs, and v6 performance near the top of its class. True to its family-friendly role, the rav4 comes standard with a long list of safety equipment.  so what was once the cute baby of the family is now the family car.  the available 269-horsepower v6 tops most of the rav4's competitors. It's more than the rav4 needs, really; but it allows the rav4 to really scoot while carrying as many as seven people and all their associated stuff. A coefficient of drag (cd) of 0. 33 is among the best in its segment and a major factor in minimizing wind noise and maximizing fuel economy.  only small details have changed for 2008. All v6 rav4s come with downhill assist control (dac) and hill-start assist control (hac).  all three trim levels are available with a 3. 5-liter, 269-hp v6 and five-speed automatic transmission, and when so equipped msrps are as follows: base 23,285), sport 24,740), and limited 25,420). The v6 is upgraded with p225/65r17 tires on styled steel wheels. The tow package increases the rav4's pulling capacity from 2000 to 3500 pounds.  the rav4 sport adds a handling-tuned suspension and p235/55r18 tires on alloy wheels, plus fog lamps, a roof rack with cross bars, heated outside mirrors; color-keyed trim outside and unique charcoal fabric inside. Options expand to include a jbl premium stereo with nine speakers, a six-cd changer, xm satellite radio, bluetooth, and steering-wheel controls 890); and a power tilt-and-slide glass sunroof 900). But the third-row seat is not offered on the sport.  the limited model upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control, premium cloth upholstery, power-adjustable driver seat, six-cd changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, leather-wrapped shift knob, cargo area net and tonneau cover, full-hard spare tire cover, the new engine immobilizer, and other amenities. Outside, limited is distinguished by a chrome grille and p225/65r17 tires on six-spoke alloy wheels; and a full, hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 700-810, depending on engine and drive combination), leather upholstery 1,050), heated front seats 440), plus the same jbl stereo 640) and sunroof available on sport. A rear-seat entertainment system 1,705) is available only on limited v6.  safety features on all rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc), traction control (trac), and a tire pressure monitor. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the 2008 rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design of the current model is more serious and more substantive than those built a few years ago. There are fewer superfluous curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished appearance.  the rav4's truck-like front end is tautly composed. Visually, the fenders are separate elements from the engine bay, a situation emphasized by a tight rectangular grille that seems to sit comfortably atop the wider bumper slits below. Headlights are compact and focused. A wide track gives the rav4 a solid stance visually, while resisting rollovers in emergency maneuvers.  the side view is oblong, a mix of boxy and oval, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. The fat, triangular c-pillar with the taillight at its base reminds us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the rav4's doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. As in the tribeca, taillights are positioned fairly high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate, sunk into the lower left side of the swing-gate below the handle, visually balances the spare. interiorinside, the 2008 rav4 is as good as ever, which is to say functional if a bit eccentric in style.  placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who has owned a previous rav4. The position and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good; that also applies to the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. The current dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we found in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials are high quality, if not lexus level. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting the outboard second-row seats, is not especially easy, but it isn't as much of a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-sized sport utilities. Still, the 104. 7-inch wheelbase of the current rav4 allows significantly more interior room than in pre-2006 models.  the honda cr-v, the rav4's closest competitor, was redesigned for 2007, but the toyota still either leads significantly, or trails by a mere fraction, in headroom and legroom, both front and rear. But the cr-v does not offer a third-row seat. Maximum cargo volume (with all seats stowed) is nearly identical: 73. 0 cubic feet for the toyota, 72. 9 for the honda.  the only competitor that comes with a standard third-row seat, the suzuki xl7, was also all-new for 2007. It provides more headroom than the rav4, particularly in the third row (by a significant 1. 6 inches). In legroom, the xl7 gives up half an inch to the rav4 up front, but gets that half inch back in the second row, and betters the toyota by almost a full inch in the third row. But in hip room, it's the xl7 that loses by 1. 6 inches up front, gains a scant 0. 7 inch in the middle, and then loses to the toyota by a whopping 5. 1 inches in the third row.  storage areas are plentiful. 2006 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, available with v6 and seven-passenger seating. introductionit's not often that toyota finds itself chasing the competition in a class that it invented. Such is the case, however, with the rav4, the original small sport utility built on a car chassis. It's not that there has been anything fundamentally wrong with the vehicle. Other suvs also offer a third row of seats, boosting passenger capacity from five to seven.  no longer, in either regard. With the 2006 rav4, toyota has caught up. There's a new, 269-horsepower, 3. 5-liter v6 engine coupled to a new, five-speed automatic. And there's an optional third row of seats that, by the way, folds into the floor, leaving a flat cargo space that holds almost five more cubic feet of stuff than the '05 model. The rav4 has been a standard-setter virtually from its inception. And the exterior is fresh, less flashy, with fewer styling gimmicks. But the same can't be said for the interior, where some of the updating appears not to have been so much an improvement as a change to something different, while still just as good as before.  the 2006 rav4 is a mix, then, of best, better and good, but with one reservation: the v6 seems almost too much for the package, as if in catching up, toyota leapt too far ahead. It's a good, solid engine, and it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. It has to haul as many as seven people, for instance, and it raises the tow rating to as high as 3500 pounds. But as it's engineered for the 2006 rav4, it just might be more than was needed. All three can be upgraded to the 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 with a new five-speed automatic 2,035 for the base; $1,915 for sport and limited). Optional are two stereos, one the same upgrade as offered on the base, the other a jbl premium system with nine speakers, including a subwoofer 590); power tilt-and-slide moonroof 900); plus many of the options available for the base model. Befitting the model's designation, the third-row seat is not offered on the sport.  the limited model upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control; an in-dash, six-disc cd changer; power-adjustable driver seat; heated outside mirrors; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rear privacy glass; cargo cover; fog lamps; p225/65r17 tires on alloy wheels; and a full, hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 810) and a rear-seat entertainment system for the v6 1,075). Leather seats are optional 1,050). Front seat heaters 440), audio upgrades, and other features are available.  safety features on all 2006 rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control and traction control. However, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are optional on all three models 650). We strongly recommend getting them. Curtain airbags are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover, the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents, while side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the new rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design is more serious, more substantive than the '06, with fewer curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished look.  the all-new 2006 rav4's front end contains all the same elements as the '05, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. The wider track (the distance between the tires side to side), by more than two inches front and rear, gives the '06 rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers.  a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat; from the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger seven-passenger, japanese-brand import, priced a notch or two above the rav4. The seven additional inches of wheelbase (measured between the front and rear wheels) and almost 14 inches of added overall length stretch the cabin and give the windshield a sleeker rake. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Wheel well arches blend smoothly into the fenders.  the back end shows more revision than either the side or front of the '06 rav4. Taillights are slightly smaller and positioned higher on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, but it's a less-aggressive recess and contained fully in the swing-gate. Thus, no longer does the bumper house the bottom third of the tire. The rear license plate preserves the asymmetrical look by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside the 2006 rav4, what change there is has been effected mostly for the sake of change. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish the new from the old. Most noteworthy are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues.  the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel combined with the multi-plane adjustable driver's seat enables almost any percentile driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats deliver the full backlight to the inside rearview mirror.  the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, sans bolsters, but no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch.  the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints that do, however, and to their credit, compel proper height adjustments to spare occupants' upper backs. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting forward the outboard second row units, while not especially easy, isn't as much a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-bodied sport utilities.  the new rav4's longer wheelbase delivered more than space for a third row of seats. It also allowed almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom over the '05. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch. Its major competitor, the 2006 honda cr-v, betters the rav4 in second-row headroom and hiproom, by about a half-inch and an inch, respectively, and in front row hiproom by a pinch more than one inch; elsewhere, differences are less than a half-inch. The 2006 suzuki xl-7 provides the sole seven-passenger competitor in the class and betters the rav4 in third-row headroom and legroom by about an inch and a half; it trails in every other measure by an inch or two. Same for cargo space, where the toyota beats the honda by a cubic foot but comes in almost two cubic feet behind the suzuki.  most everything in the instrument cluster and on the dash of the new rav4 is where it was in the 2005 models. The speedometer is now centered in the cluster, swapping places with the tachometer, which is now off to the left, and the fuel and coolant gauges are conjoined on the right, instead of splitting their own circle. But the placement, and most important, the usability of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as the '05, which means very good, and the.
